The Puppet Project

The Puppet Project is a program created by Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention for the purpose of reinforcing a healthy self-concept, healthy and normal attitudes about eating, and acceptance of diverse body shapes in grades K-5.  Reaching this population with messages of healthy self-esteem is particularly important since we know that the foundation of eating disorders is often laid before or soon after children enter elementary school.  The project is an interactive presentation with three scripts appropriate for different age groups.  Four life-size Bunraku style puppets make up the "troupe".  The presentation is accompanied with teacher's handouts, class activities and evaluation forms for teachers and children in order for EDAP to track the effectiveness of this unique programming effort.

GO GIRLS!
Giving Our Girls Inspiration and Resources for Lasting Self-Esteem

The GO GIRLS! program is a 12-week curriculum developed by Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention shaped to fit the realities of young women in today's society. It focuses on crucial topics like body image, media awareness, and the power of speaking out against negative messages and the lack of body-shape diversity in the media, entertainment, and fashion industries.

PENED recently completed the first GO GIRLS! program in the Pittsburgh area at Mt. Lebanon High School.  Ten high school girls worked with and were mentored by communications and health professionals during the program, which was a voluntary activity for the students.  Some of the feedback received indicated that the program was a meaningful and worthwhile experience.  "I feel that the self-confidence and acceptance of my body that I gained from the project is priceless.  I also learned that the value of my voice in the professional world which made me realize that my voice can make a difference," was the reaction of Lauren Campbell, a GO GIRLS! participant.

How to Help A Friend

This program was developed by Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention to teach concerned individuals how to best approach the topic of eating disorders and body image with those they care about.  Basic educational information is included in this program, as are suggestions and resources for referrals.  This program is appropriate for both school and workplace settings.

Know Dieting

"Know Dieting" is a program designed by Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention to educate individuals about the possible adverse consequences of dieting.  Our culture is surrounded by the myth that everyone is dieting or should be dieting, and this program refocuses that attention on the importance of taking care of oneself holistically by attending to basic health and wellness issues.  Participants will learn about and discuss the dangers of trying to alter one's body shape through dieting, the value of moderate exercising toward stamina and cardiovascular fitness, and the importance of eating a variety of foods in well-balanced meals consumed at least three times a day.

This program is appropriate for school and workplace settings.  It is especially directed toward student organizations such as sororities where peer pressure may be high.  This program gives individuals the tools to combat the hurtful mythology of the dieting industry.

Speakers' Bureau

PENED maintains a speakers bureau that is available for presentations.  Professionals such as psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, therapists, and registered dieticians are available for engagements.  Individuals in recovery from an eating disorder are also available.
